Overview

Key Stage 3 

Overview 

All students at Key Stage 3 study Design and Technology alongside Food Technology on a carousel system where they will have opportunities to explore resistant materials, textiles and food, throughout the year. Alongside the practical responses, the development of reading and writing about the subject is essential. They have the choice to further study GCSE 3D Design, GCSE Three-dimensional design and Hospitality and Catering Level 1/2. Throughout each key stage we aim to promote a broad understanding of the catering industry and the practical skills involved in planning and cooking a dish, the use design and designers to develop ideas, experiment with materials and techniques that lead to finished design pieces. The very nature of our subject allows the teacher to contribute to the intellectual, emotional, social, physical and spiritual development of students.

Key stage 4 Design & Technology

Overview

In Key Stage 4, students follow the WJEC Eduqas GCSE in Design and Technology. The course offers an opportunity for learners to identify and solve real problems by designing and making products or systems. Through studying GCSE Design and Technology, learners will develop all skills that are involved in the design process including research, designing, developing prototyping, manufacturing, CAD and evaluation. Alongside this they will develop a broad knowledge of materials, components and technologies and practical skills to develop high quality, imaginative and functional prototypes.

Design Technology is taught in ways that inspire creativity and encourage independence, whilst equipping students with the knowledge and understanding for their theory exam.

Students are taught 5 hours per fortnight.

Overview

In Key Stage 4, students follow the AQA GCSE syllabus for Art and Design (Three- dimensional design) (8205). This course provides opportunities for students to develop skills in designing and creating prototypes, models or making functional and aesthetic products and objects. Ideas are developed through the study and research of both artists and designers. GCSE Three-dimensional design is taught in ways that inspire and bring out the best in all students, whilst equipping them with the skills and knowledge to continue the subject with confidence at A Level and beyond. This is a coursework based subject with a final practical externally set assignment of 10 hours.

Students are taught 5 hours per fortnight.

Overview

Students who choose to opt for 3D Design in Year 12 will follow the AQA A Level Art and Design (3D Design) specification (7205). In Year 12 students will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of 3D processes, media, techniques. The course provides opportunities to respond to a range of themes, concepts or ideas that includes the appreciation of drawing for different purposes, using a variety of construction methods and media on a variety of scales. They will further develop their practical skills and critical and contextual knowledge learned at GCSE. Development of skills and knowledge gained will support students' responses in Year 13 for their personal investigation unit. Students will plan and prepare for an externally set assignment in Year 13 to produce a practical piece in 15 hours.

The course supports progression to further education in 3D Design, Product Design and related subjects, as well as providing all students with a platform to inspire a lifelong interest in, and enjoyment of Design.

Enrichment opportunities:

Year 10 and 11 students are welcome to attend after school sessions with a supervising member of staff should they wish to receive additional feedback and 1:1 support with their coursework, or to make use of computers, materials and resources in a more relaxed environment. These sessions allow students the opportunity to enhance their skills, explore further techniques, and maximise their potential before submitting their work at the end of Year 11.
